Stone Wall House
Location: Penghu Island, Taiwan
Year: 2022
History of Penghu Traditional Houses: Our design references the floor plan layout and proportions of traditional Penghu houses, while adjusting the scale and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces to meet modern needs. The three houses within the site each have their own independent courtyard while sharing common spaces.
Built with the Terrain: Taking advantage of the gentle slope of the site, the three houses are designed across different levels of terraces. They enjoy different views while maintaining their respective privacy.
Regional Materials: For the perimeter walls of the three houses, we used coral stone (locality-specific luan-shih / lao-gu-shi), and other materials—including ground paving stones, concrete structures, and roof tiles—are all sourced locally. Our design respects Penghu's history while simultaneously interpreting a modern style.
Responding to Penghu's Climate: The orientation, wall placements, and height-to-width proportions of our entire architecture are set according to the directions of Penghu's winter and summer monsoons. The sloped roof design references traditional Penghu house architecture while also reducing wind resistance for the building.
